Irish china and glassware maker Waterford Wedgwood is considering bidding for Sara Lee-owned Coach and Mannesmann AG“s watch brand Jaeger-LeCoultre, the Financial Times reported recently. “I have no doubt Coach is something we“ll discuss and we will certainly take a look at the Mannesmann business,” said Waterford Wedgwood Chairman Tony O“Reilly. The chairman said he hoped to transform Waterford Wedgwood into a luxury goods group representing “the best of the best in the world”. He expected this to require two or three takeovers. US meat and coffee group Sara Lee is reportedly planning an initial public offering of 20% of leather goods company Coach. Germany“s Mannesmann is expected to sell Jaeger-LeCoultre, in which it has a 60% stake, following its takeover by Britain“s Vodafone AirTouch Plc earlier this year.
