Irish households deposited a total of 46,000 tonnes of glass for recycling in the first eight months of 2008, it was revealed on 8 October 2008. Rehab Recycle said 149.5 million bottles and jars were left in its banks between January and August 2008. People in Cork are the best glass recyclers, with an average of 74 bottles per person. Galway and Leitrim came a close second with 64 and 63 items per head. Rehab“s Bob Rowat said: “The results show the great efforts of people to recycle”. “However, we need to continue to encourage people to bring their glass to recycling banks where it is separated… thereby minimising contamination”.
