With its huge quartz and lead resources, cheap electricity and low labour costs, Iran has the potential to become a leading world crystal ware producer, if the state provides the necessary support to the sector, said Ahmad Amir Ahmadi, the chairman of the Iranian Glass and Crystal Producers Association, on 25 May 2004. The main centres for crystal production are Tehran and Tabriz provinces. Tehran“s annual crystal output stands at 500 tonnes. Production costs per kilo are currently some IRR 50,000 (USD 5.83/EUR 4.8). Iranian crystal ware production is aimed at the domestic market, Ahmadi said, adding that the state should take measures to stop illegal crystal imports, estimated at five tonnes a year, which hinder domestic production.
