On 4 April Ineos Chlor denied rumours that the UK government has agreed to help finance the GBP 635 million planned refurbishment of its chlorine plant at Runcorn, UK. A company spokesperson said certain press reports suggested a deal had been reached. “The actual situation is that talks are still ongoing,” he added. Jim Ratcliffe, chairman of Ineos Capital met with Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt to discuss the financial future of the plant late last year. Ineos Chlor acquired the 763,000 mt/yr plant from ICI in January 2001. Separately it was pursuing a warranty claim against ICI as the state of the plant at purchase was said to be unsatisfactory.
