A proposal by a leading glass manufacturer to establish a silica sand extraction unit near Rock Garden at Orvakal in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh state has been welcomed by jobseekers but condemned by environmentalists, who say that pollution from the unit could spoil the rock garden, which is a tourist attraction. There is also concern that the silica extraction unit would consume the most beautiful rock formations. Environmentalists have asked for protection for the rock formations as natural monuments and called for the relocation of the proposed operation to a less sensitive spot.
