7 May 1998: US-based IMC Global Inc. president and chief executive officer Robert Fowler Jr. said that near-term market conditions for IMC“s global chemical business, which it bought from Harris Chemical on 1 April, are expected to be flat with the first quarter. “Inventories will remain tight and soda ash demand is projected to increase due to growing requirements in Asia,” he said. “The US chemicals industry in general has experienced lower exports in recent months following the economic slowdown in Asia,” Fowler added.
