The inaugural ceremony of the installed facilities at the modernisation and expansion projects at ICI Pakistan“s Soda Ash Plant in Khewra was held on 2 April. Federal Minister for Finance Shaukat Aziz was the chief guest on this occasion. The modernization and expansion projects include installation of DCS Control System, 5.2 mw co-generation installation and de-bottlenecking of various units, at a total cost of PKR 525 million. According to ICI Pakistan officials, the newly installed facilities at the plant include DCS control system, 5.2-megawatt co-generation and de-bottlenecking of various units. Moreover, the original plant capacity of 18 kilo tons per annum (ktpa) has been increased to 225 ktpa through a number of expansion projects. Officials said that the expansion was being made to meet the demand of the continuously growing soda ash market in Pakistan. They claimed that ICI, the market leader in this sector, has been investing in expansion of manufacturing facilities to ensure that the demand for this important raw material was met adequately. Commercial production of the plant had begun in 1944, it was added.
