Passing on knowledge, and stimulating and encouraging the next generation to think creatively in key technical areas that underpin our society is a key objective of the ICG. To underline this, a very successful ICG summer school took place in May 2009 for the first time in Montpellier, France. Based on the positive experience and the feedback of the participating students the ICG offers now a second summer school entitled: Glass – the fourth state of matter? – to take place 26-30 July 2010, at Montpellier. On the first day of the workshop a broad overview of key fundamentals in glass science and technology will be presented. Subsequently individual days will focus on the Glass Transition, Crystallisation and Glass Surfaces, and will, in each case, cover fundamentals, techniques and applications. The lectures will be presented by ten world experts from industry and academia. A significant aspect of the workshop will be a series of projects that encourage interactions with other members of the group, and that help to develop understanding by applying what has been learned to specific issues. The course is designed for new PhD students or for young researchers who have recently started research in the glass industry.
