Japanese optical products manufacturer Hoya Corp. said 1 June 2004 it will start making photomasks for large-size LCD panels in South Korea in 2005. The company, which controls 60% of the global market for LCD photo masks, will set up a wholly owned subsidiary in Kyonggi-do, central South Korea, by the end of 2004, aiming to start production in the 2H of 2005. Hoya expects strong demand from South Korean LCD makers who are currently building new production lines for next-generation LCD substrates. Several panels are made out of each substrate. Hoya“s South Korean plant will make photomasks starting from 850 millimeter-by-1,200 millimeter. The company currently makes photomasks at a plant in Kumamoto Prefecture, southern Japan. A new photomask plant is now under construction in Taiwan, with output scheduled to start in the 2H of 2004.
