India“s Horticulture Department“s assistant director, Mr. Bettasomaiah, said construction of a glass house on the lines of Lal Bagh at Bangalore would attract the general public in greater numbers, to the Dasara Flower Show, which is conducted every year, as part of Dasara festivities. He also hinted that the Mysore City Corporation, Mysore Urban Development Authority and Horticulture Department has decided to conduct a meeting, along with the state Horticulture Department, shortly, in this regard. Bettasomaiah said the glass house in Bangalore has added more beauty to the flowers and thereby attracts a large number of people all through the year. The department said it is therefore interested in setting up a similar structure there – or perhaps something smaller than the glass house in Bangalore – to attract people regularly and to make the exhibition permanent, he said. “In the recent-past, gardening has gained importance, and moreover, developing the garden in an attractive manner is considered to be an art,” Bettasomaiah said. With this, the public have started developing their gardens in the most attractive manner, competing with their neighbours and friends, he said, giving out the reason for the growing response from the public. Bettasomaiah said that this year, more than 630 participants have enrolled to compete in the flower shows, out of which 135 entries are from the private gardens, 49 from public parks, 14 from industrial institutes, 63 from educational institutions, 16 from Hospital gardens, 36 from hotel gardens, 21 from guest house gardens, 83 from officers“ guest house, 10 from police stations, eight from post offices, 70 from administrative offices, he explained. This year, for the “Best Flower-show contest”, there has been tremendous response, compared to last year, according to Bettasomaiah. He called upon the public to involve themselves in development of gardens and parks.
