UK building products group Heywood Williams said it expects 2007 profits to be largely unchanged on the figure for 2006. The north of England-based manufacturer and supplier of doors and windows forecast pre-tax profits of at least GBP 9 million for 2007 against GBP 9.4 million in 2006. Trading had been “satisfactory” in tough markets, with a good performance in the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia and the Baltic states offsetting difficult trading in the prefabricated housing market in the USA. The performance was helped by Avenco, the Irish-based manufacturer of handles, hinges and locks, which Heywood Williams acquired in August 2007. It also enjoyed a “good” first full year“s contribution from Carlisle Brass, the hardware company bought in 2006. The group said it was well-positioned to continue taking share in key markets, but said UK consumers were more cautious about spending on moving house or on home improvements.
