The Harrachov-based glassworks Novosad a syn opened its own small brewery on 13 January, with annual capacity of some 5,000 hectolitres of beer to be sold to tourists visiting the glassworks but especially to the company“s glassworkers, owner Frantisek Novosad recently stated to the press. “Glassworkers at the furnace where temperatures reach 60 degrees Celsius, drink about six beers per shift. We will not have to buy it elsewhere now,” said Novosad. The private brewery cost about Euro 31,400 to build. With the Czech glass industry in recession, Novosad has decided to attract tourists to the glassworks to raise his revenues. Tours of the glassworks will now be combined with the tasting of the beer. Last year, the glassworks was visited by 30,000 tourists, most of them from Germany and Holland. The glassworks was founded in 1712, and was in the past a part of state-owned enterprise Crystalex Novy Bor. Novosad privatized it in 1993. He employs 160 staff. Annual turnover reaches Euro 2.5 million, 10% of which comes from tourism.
