16 April 1998: Recent press reports state that Western Australian diversified miner, Gwalia Consolidated, saw tantalum sales at its Wodgina mine reach 77,613 lbs. for the first half of the year ended December 1997. Gwalia said that production from Wodgina has increased steadily throughout the year and total output is estimated at 150,000 lbs. for the full year, representing a 10% increase over the previous year. Gwalia expects to further increase production next year to 180,000 lbs., with plant modifications in 1999 expected to increase installed capacity to approximately 300,000 lbs. annually thereafter. Tantalum sales from the company“s Greenbushes mine totalled 353,832 lbs. for the first half, with a marginal increase to 380,000 lbs. expected in the second half leading to estimated full-year production of around 740,000 lbs., up 38% on the previous year. Gwalia“s consolidated net operating profit for the half year was A$ 1.368 million.
