Yiwei Lu of Ann Arbor, Mich. US, and Thomas A. Seder of Northville, Mich., have developed a method for making a coated article. The inventors were issued U.S. Patent No. 7,537,677 on 26 May 2009 assigned to Guardian Industries Corp., Auburn Hills, Mich. According to the abstract released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: “Certain example embodiments of this invention relate to a method of making a coated article including a low emissivity coating supported by a glass substrate. In certain example embodiments, at least one layer comprising zinc oxide is provided adjacent and contacting an infrared reflecting layer. A ceramic zinc inclusive target is used in sputter-depositing the layer comprising zinc oxide. In certain example embodiments, the ceramic zinc inclusive target may be substoichiometric and/or doped with a non-metal such as fluorine.” The original application was filed on 19 January 2005.
