25 June 1998: The first sheets of float glass for sale on Brazil“s domestic market left the furnace at Guardian Industries“ new plant in Porto Real, Brazil, earlier this month. The official opening will not, however, take place until August. The new US$ 125 million plant is the latest step in the US-based company“s plan to increase its share of the Brazilian flat glass market from 12% to 28%. This will create competition in a market currently dominated by Cebrace (a partnership between Saint-Gobain of France and Pilkington of the United Kingdom). Mark Lassoed, director of Guardian do Brasil Vidros Planos, said that the company intends to compete in both service and quality.
