Belgian glassmaker Glaverbel SA (B.GLA) said 24 April that first-quarter sales rose 12% to Euro 454 million due to increased volumes shipped and the strong rise in raw glass prices. Glaverbel added that the average price for float glass was around 25% higher than in the first quarter of 2000. “The expansion in activity is expected to be less vigorous during the rest of the year but will nevertheless be favorably influenced by prices stabilizing at a good level, good prospects for the automotive sector and the startup of a fourth float glass plant in Belgium,” the company said. Glaverbel asserted “results for the automotive division at the end of March are in line with the schedule for improving performance.” “In view of this, the group confirms its forecast for at least 20% improvement in the net result by the end of 2001,” the company added.
