21 January 1999: GLASSTECH ASIA 2000, the Second International Glass Products, Glass Manufacturing, Processing & Materials Exhibition and Conference, which is organized by Conference & Exhibition Management Services Pte Ltd (CEMS) and the Singapore Glass Merchants & Glaziers Association, has received full support from the Singapore Trade Development Board (STDB) under the International Exhibition City (IEC) programme. According to a recent press release, the IEC programme, which aims to develop Singapore as a world-class exhibition city, will help the organizers finance some of its promotional activities and also facilitate dissemination of information through various STDB offices. Such assistance is expected to enhance and widen the reach of GLASSTECH ASIA 2000 to the entire flat glass industry in the Asia Pacific region. The premiere show in 1998 attracted a total of 3,509 trade visitors from 40 countries and regions. Of these, 28% were from outside Singapore. With the IEC support, the organizers hope to increase the number of overseas visitors to 35%. Under the IEC Programme, eligible Singapore-based exhibitors will also enjoy a Double Tax Deduction (DTD) from their taxable income for most expenses incurred from participation in the event. These include space rental, stand construction, print promotion, etc. “Response from exhibitors has been coming in steadily,” said Gan Chee Siong, chairman of Singapore Glass Merchants & Glaziers Association. “Local companies are pleased to hear of this scheme, coming at a time when the government was announcing a series of business incentive packages to overcome the financial crisis.” Gilbert Aue from Aue Gilbert Impex (AGI) Singapore Pte Ltd., a major exhibitor at the last GLASSTECH ASIA, said: “As one of the major suppliers in glass processing tools and machinery in the region, we have to acknowledge the problems caused by the recession. But on the other hand, we are glad to find out that many of the sound glass processing companies and glaziers take advantage of the less hectic time by consolidating their businesses. Especially small and medium sized companies in Indonesia and Malaysia, who are increasingly buying new equipment since they find time to learn new technical processes.” Four months after its launch, GLASSTECH ASIA 2000 has now received endorsement from three major trade associations, namely the Italian Association of Glassworking Machinery and Accessories Suppliers (GIMAV), Glass & Glazing Federation, United Kingdom (GGF) and National Glass Association, USA (NGA). Overall, GLASSTECH ASIA 2000 will occupy 6,000 square metres of gross space at the Singapore Expo. The number of exhibitors is projected to rise to 200 major companies and agents from 25 countries. Confirmed country pavilions to-date include Italy, UK and the US.
