9 April 1998: Gerresheimer Glas AG of Germany announced its figures for the calendar year of 1997. Profit from ordinary activities was at DM 65.2 million compared with DM 104.6 million a year earlier. Net profit was down 20% at DM 53.1 million, while sales were up 5% at DM 1,700 million. The German glassmaker said profits had fallen due to a significant sales decline in its glass container business. The company said that with effect from 1 January, it had bought majority stakes in Belgium“s Nouvelles Verreries de Momignies and Poland“s Polfa, as well as increasing its stake in US firm Kimble USA Inc. to 100%. It also said these acquisitions are expected to lead to a sales increase of around DM 130 million. Gerresheimer is a unit of Viag.
