Sales of Georgian-made glass packaging to neighboring Azerbaijan will reportedly total 10 million items (3,500 tons) in 2004, more than double the amount sold in 2003. The main consumers of glass packaging in Azerbaijan are producers of beer, wine, and mineral water, and include Baku-Castel, Tovuz-Baltia, Khayal, Shamkir Winemaking Plant, Baku Champagne Factory, Ganja Sharab-2 and Zeytun. “Only this year Baku-Castel ordered 6 million bottles,” said Tamaz Chercharauli, Marketing and Sales Manager of the Mina Glass Factory JSC (the only producer of glass packaging in Georgia). Mr. Chercharauli said the Azerbaijan market was of strategic interest to Mina JSC. He said the annual demand for new glass packaging in Azerbaijan is 15,000 tons (up to 40 or 50 million bottles). Many new businesses producing pomegranate juice negotiate with Mina JSC to have special bottles produced for them. Mina JSC sold 118 million bottles totaling USD 8.5 million in 2003, mostly for Borzhomi mineral water (70 million bottles). Mina JSC is a subsidiary of Turkey“s Sisecam and is located 40 km from the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. In 1997 the Turkish company bought 81% of the shares in Mina. The International Financial Corporation owns 19%. Production of glass packaging was revived in 1998.
