Gentex Corporation, the US-based manufacturer of automatic-dimming rearview mirrors and commercial fire protection products, is shipping interior automatic-dimming mirrors with telematics functions to Ford Motor Company for the 2002 Lincoln Town Car. The mirrors contain the interface for the Lincoln Vehicle Communications System, which delivers a digital, wireless phone connection to the vehicle and enables functions like emergency roadside assistance, hands-free phone operation, and concierge services. Buttons on the face of the mirror activate the various telematics features. The Gentex mirror is available in high level Town Car option package. Telematics systems use wireless voice and/or data connections to deliver communication, safety, navigation and information services to vehicles. It is considered to be the fastest-growing segment of the automotive industry. “Technology is evolving so rapidly today that the task of integrating new electronic features into the vehicle is more challenging than ever,” said Ken La Grand, Gentex“s executive vice president. “But by putting telematics components in our auto-dimming mirrors, we can help automakers introduce new technologies quickly and affordably, in a safe, flexible, high-performance location that“s easy to service and update.” Gentex“s Night Vision SafetyTM NVS(R) Mirrors are active crash-avoidance safety features. They automatically darken to reduce glare from the headlamps of vehicles approaching from the rear. The brighter the glare, the darker the mirrors become, protecting driver vision and making night-time driving safer.
