22 January 1998: Further to our GlassOnline report of 6 November 1997, General Electric said it is engaged in a joint venture with Bayer Corp. of Germany to develop unbreakable windows for cars and trucks. The company announced the location of their new plant, which will open in Wixom, Michigan, while at the same time create 190 jobs. The Michigan Jobs Commission director Doug Rothwell stated the US$25-million venture was a result of the state“s MEGA program, which granted the firms a tax break of US$5.8 million. GE“s plastics division director Douglas Nutter confirmed the tax cut caused them to pick the Michigan location over Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana, which were once possible sites for the new plant.
