21 January 1999: US-based chemical and machinery group FMC Corp. said its FMC Wyoming Corp. unit agreed to purchase Tg Soda Ash Inc., a subsidiary of French oil company Elf Acquitaine“s Elf Atochem, for an undisclosed sum. FMC said the deal is subject to government approval. Tg Soda Ash has mining and production facilities adjacent to FMC soda ash operations in Green River, Wyoming, FMC and Elf Atochem said in a joint statement. “Our mine operation is so close to Tg“s property that we will be able to substantially improve the competitive position of Tg“s soda ash plant by supplying trona ore from the FMC mine,” Robert Harries, general manager of FMC“s Chemical Products Group, said. FMC Wyoming is a joint venture between FMC, Nippon Sheet Glass Company Ltd. and Sumitomo Corp.. FMC annual soda ash production capacity is 3.55 million tons, and Tg annual soda ash production capacity is 1.3 million tons per year, the company said.
