4 February 1999: According to a recent report, Elf Atochem North America is to sell Tg Soda Ash to FMC Wyoming Corp. for an undisclosed sum. FMC Wyoming is a joint venture between FMC Corp., Nippon Sheet Glass Co. and Sumitomo Corp. The deal is subject to final negotiations and approvals. Tg is located close to FMC“s soda ash operations, which will enable substantial synergies, cost savings and increased competitiveness. These will be critical to pursuing international growth opportunities, FMC said. Trona ore from the FMC mine will be supplied to the Tg soda ash plant, improving its competitive position. FMC“s mining activities can be extended to Tg“s ore reserves without the cost of opening a new mine. Tg has soda ash capacity of 1.3 million tons/year, compared with FMC“s 3.55 million tons.
