18 June 1998: US-based Flint Glass Workers Union, one of the nation“s oldest labour unions, announced it will merge with the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW). The Toledo Blade reported that members of the American Flint Glass Workers, a union formed in 1878 to combat poor wages and dangerous working conditions in glass factories, are expected to vote 30 June on the proposal to merge with the 1.4 million-member UFCW. Press reports have said declining membership and a reduction in support from the AFL-CIO prompted the union“s board of trustees to propose the merger. The American Flint Glass Workers Union, the only national union with headquarters in Toledo, represents about 18,000 mould-makers and other workers in 125 locals at glass plants operated by firms that include industry giants Libbey Inc. of Toledo and Corning Inc. of Corning, New York. Details of the proposed merger are not final, but officials said they expect it to be completed this year if the membership of both unions agree. The food workers union, formed in 1979 by the merger of retail clerks and meat cutters, has absorbed several unions in recent years. The most recent addition was the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union.
