The German glassmaker Flachglas AG is being investigated in connection with extra wages paid to employees who were later made redundant, according to the state prosecutor“s office. In late November, one employee was held for questioning after police searched company offices in Gelsenkirchen and Witten. Flachglas is suspected of raising wages to enable workers due to be made redundant to qualify for higher unemployment benefits. The scheme allegedly cost the Federal Labour Office several hundred thousand marks in lost revenues. Flachglas has cut more than 500 jobs in the last 12 months, helping to raise profits even though sales have remained at around DM 1.5 million.
