18 December 1997: Flachglas of Germany, part of the Pilkington group, reported an increase in pre-tax profits to DM 45.7 million in the first half of 1997/98, while the company“s turnover rose as well by 0.9% to DM 442.7 million. The company said that the increase in profits was due to company cost reductions and high demand for glass during the six-month period, even though prices for coated, laminated and glazing glass were unstable. While the company reported a good first half of the year, their earnings from investment and financial business dropped. However, a new coating plant to produce high quality glass went into operation over the summer, and supposedly the plant can help ensure an improved market position.
