A total of 97.5% of the used bottles in Finland were collected for recycling in 2001, the Finnish Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry said. Finnish breweries and soft drink makers bottle 81% of their production in recyclable bottles. According to a survey by the federation, 81% of the beer consumers and 95% of soft drink consumers in Finland are willing to buy drinks in recyclable glass or plastic bottles. Glass bottles circulate between the drink factory and the consumer 30 times on average, and plastic bottles 20 times on average. Finns can return used bottles at 8,000 locations throughout the country, and beer and soft drink producers collect empty bottles from some 20,000 locations. Glass bottles, which can no longer be filled again are used as raw material for new bottles, and old plastic bottles are usually used as raw material for textiles.
