The chairman of French eyeware maker Essilor, Xavier Fontanet, said that, although the group“s divisions had made good progress since the summer, full-year activity would not show a marked increase. Fontanet also said that Essilor had spent some FFr 90 million (US$14 million) modernizing its computing systems, of which half should be considered an exceptional charge. “Although all the zones, notably Europe, have seen good activity since the summer, they will not post marked growth for the full year and, furthermore, Essilor has had to spend about FFr 90 million modernizing its computor systems, of which half can be considered as an exceptional,” he was quoted as saying. He also said that he expected Essilor“s 50-50 joint venture with Japan“s Nikon Corp. to have sales of FFr 600 million, and that Essilor“s half would be consolidated in its accounts. Essilor is 32% owned by French glassmaker Saint-Gobain.
