28 May 1998: Topics related to the understanding and predicting of the chemistry and technology of the processing, production, behaviour and properties of glass and glass-ceramic materials will be the focus of the 5th conference of the European Society of Glass Science and Technology (ESG), which will be held from 21-24 June this year at the Hilton-Atrium Hotel in Prague, Czech Republic. The conference, “Glass Science and Technology for the 21st Century”, is being organized by the Czech Glass Society in conjunction with the ESG and Agentura Carolina Ltd. under the auspices of the International Commission on Glass (ICG). In the Glass Science sphere, the issues under consideration will include: glass structure; the properties of glass and glass-ceramics; glass surfaces; new glasses; glass-ceramics (synthesis and applications). As regards Glass Technology, subjects which may be discussed include: raw materials; melting, forming and modelling; glass manufacture; control and quality systems; energy savings; environmental issues; refractories; glass furnaces; history of glass technology. English will be the official language of the conference, during which there will also be meetings of the Council and the Steering Committee of the ICG and ESG, as well as the Coordinating Technical Committee and other Technical Committees of the ICG. A programme of cultural activities and sightseeing tours of Prague and its surroundings will be arranged for participants and those accompanying them.
