17 June 1999: Hungarian glass producer Egyesult Magyar Csomagolouveg (EMCS) Kft has laid off 150 workers from its Oroshaza-based blown-glass factory as a consequence of the factory“s capacity reduction. Chief executive of Owens Illinois, EMCS“s owner, said that after the production capacity of the blown-glass factory had been cut by 50%, the costs also had to be reduced. One way to reduce costs was to make 30% of the workers redundant, he said. The laid-off workers were paid a final payment of nearly Ft 600,000 each. The lay-off pays totalled Ft 90 million. The company said it wants to rationalize its energy consumption and decrease its specific costs by up-grading its furnaces with US$ 8 million.
