Sergio Molla, a Barcelona restaurant owner, has won a trip worth EUR 6,000 in a prize draw organized by Ecovidrio to thank the hostelry sector for supporting its “Horeca“ glass recycling programme launched three years ago. The aim of the programme is to promote separate waste collection in the hostelry sector, which consumes 48% of glass in Spain. Currently, 14,000 hostelry establishments participate or have participated in the initiative. To obtain his prize, Mr. Molla had to send an SMS with the word “Recicla“ and a participation code. A new prize draw is on its way for the hostelry sector to promote an increase in glass recycling to reach the level of 60% required by the EU by 2008. Under the Horeca programme an area of a locality is studied in order to make glass waste collection bins more accessible to hostelry operators. After visits to all the hostelries in the area, the needs expressed by operators are analysed and solutions put forward including the repositioning of bins and putting in bins with larger slots. All this is preceded by an information campaign which shows operators how to separate glass waste correctly, what to put in the bins and what not, and the benefits of recycling for the environment.
