Plants of the US group DuPont producing Butacite polyvinyl butyral (PVB) safety glass interlayer at Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Parkersburg, West Virginia, have gained the US automotive industry“s coveted QS 9000 award for quality management systems. DuPont boasts that it is the only PVB manufacturer in the world to have received this award. The company“s plants producing Butacite at Uentrop in Germany and Ulsan in Korea are certified to ISO 9000 and DuPont“s marketing operations in Europe have earned Marketing Quality Assurance (MQA) registration. MQA applies ISO 9001 quality assurance standards to sales, marketing and customer service functions, including business planning and management. QS-9000 is a quality system standard developed by the US automotive industry. Its requirements exceed those of the International Organisation for Standards“ ISO 9000 in respect of their breadth, and the depth to which they are assessed. It stipulates that manufacturers must have documented quality systems related to the requirements of specific customers and to the implementation of these systems. Once registered, companies“ compliance is reviewed periodically by an accredited third party. The registrar for DuPont“s Butacite plants in the US was Lloyd“s Register Quality Assurance, which offers certification services in more than 30 countries. Butacite, introduced in 1938, is used extensively to produce laminated safety glass windshields and is increasingly being considered for intrusion-resistant side windows in cars. Laminated glass with Butacite interlayer is now being used more and more for architectural glazing.
