29 October 1998: Dutch chemicals group DSM NV of the Netherlands said its automotive polymers unit was teaming up with US firm Owens Corning to produce and market light-weight reinforced polypropylene materials for use in car manufacture. The joint venture is to be based in the Netherlands, with production at DSM“s Specialty Compounds facility in Genk, Belgium, DSM said in a statement. The joint venture will market a long fibre reinforced polypropylene material system intended to replace the use of metal in certain areas of car manufacture, leading to significant reductions in weight and vehicle cost. “This new solution is aimed at both replacing metal parts and reducing the number of manufacturing steps,” said Hans Dijkman, director of DSM“s Automotive Polymers business unit. “Reduction of system cost is clearly the driver behind the addition of these products to our portfolio,” he said. Targeted starting date for the joint venture is 1 January 1999.
