Donnelly Corporation has recently received a new business commitment to supply electrochromic mirrors for a new, full-sized sport utility vehicle to be built in the United States beginning in 1999. When the vehicle is launched, most of the units produced will be equipped with a Donnelly electrochromic mirror; the commitment is expected to generate production of 50,000 electrochromic mirrors each year for the life of the vehicle program. Donnelly plans to assemble the mirrors at its manufacturing facilities in Michigan. “This order represents the growing awareness among our OEM customers that it is strategically in their best interests to have two strong suppliers for EC mirrors,” said Dwane Baumgardner, Donnelly chairman and chief executive officer. “Our expanding customer base speaks for itself in terms of the strength of our technology and the quality of our product.” Donnelly electrochromic mirrors use the company“s patented GLAREFREE(TM) technology. During night-time driving, electrochromic mirrors dim automatically to protect drivers from the headlight glare generated by following vehicles. Donnelly claims to be the only international automotive supplier with the capabilities to provide complete “one-stop” shopping for interior and exterior automotive mirror systems. The company also announced recently that it had won a major new business commitment for electrochromic mirrors on a European luxury vehicle.
