Donnelly Corporation of the United States has developed a rear-view camera system that mounts microscopic lenses on computer chips to eliminate the need for exterior side mirrors. The company expects to have the mirror system ready soon after the turn of the century, said Donn Viola, Donnelly“s Chief Operating Officer for North American operations. Donnelly is determining ways to lower system costs, an obstacle to mass production, Mr. Viola said. A key might be integrating the camera system with new electronics modules the company is developing for overhead mirror units. Those include shifting the outside temperature and safety display features – as well as other instrument panel displays – to the console of most passenger vehicles.
