A logistics supplier to the glass and container industry has centralised its UK operations in Leeds, northern England with an initial GBP 250,000 investment in premises and plant. Demes Logistics, part of the GBP 1.6 billion D S Smith Group, is a European leader in the provision of returnable packaging, with clients including Budweiser, and the investment in Leeds follows its acquisition of ER&GE (UK) Ltd, which operated from the site. Glass container companies in the surrounding area, including Allied, Ardagh and Beatson Clark are leading customers. Leslie Law, Demes“ quality and customer services manager, said Leeds was now the company“s UK HQ, centralising operations from Clay Cross (East Midlands) and Harlow (south-east England). “The city“s central location, its major road and rail links make it ideal for servicing UK companies and the close proximity of Leeds Bradford Airport, major road and rail links add to the package. Senior managers from company headquarters in Germany can fly in direct from Dusseldorf and the expanding number of routes serviced by the airport provide easy access for European visitors to the site”. At the heart of the Leeds operation are two huge washing machines.
