28 August 1998: A recent press report has said that Dartington Crystal“s managing director has been appointed Lord Lieutenant for Devon by 10 Downing Street. Eric Dancer will succeed the recently retired Earl Morley and become the 26th Lord Lieutenant in a line which stretches back to 1559. That was when the post was created by Henry VIII to maintain order and be responsible for all local defensive military measures. Mr. Dancer, who lives near Totnes, has also served as Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Devon since the beginning of the year. He became managing director of the Torrington-based glassmaking firm in 1986. As Lord Lieutenant, he will be expected to represent the monarch in the county and uphold the dignity of the Crown. The office is impartial and non-political and Mr. Dancer will be expected to exercise “tact and forbearance,“ the report said.
