12 March 1998: Dartington Crystal has been on the move, with a new collection of “masterpiece” crystal sculptures designed by expert glass blower Josef Marcolin recently launched at the Spring Fair in Birmingham, England. The company had also just announced its new distributorship in the UK for Muurla, the Finnish glassware producer (see GlassOnline story of 26 February 1998). Now, on a lighter note, Dartington Crystal“s Barbican Glassworks announced it has made a special glass frying pan, a trophy for the winners of a Pancake Day Race along Plymouth“s Barbican, a quayside in Southwest England. Sales assistants at the Barbican Glassworks were expected to participate in a traditional Shrove Tuesday race (the day before Ash Wednesday), and more than 20 teams from the Barbican Traders Association and other companies and organisations were also expected to take part. Each team was three-strong and the race was run as a relay, with each member of the team having to toss the pancake six times during their run. Teams were requested to bring their own frying pans, while the winner would receive the glass frying pan perpetual trophy, to be returned for competition every year.
