21 May 1998: The industry of glass and light ceramics in the Czech Republic reportedly has a highly positive foreign trade balance. According to developments in foreign trade with these products, the Industry and Trade Ministry estimates that this field had a positive balance last year of about Kcs 20 billion, compared to Kcs 17.4 billion in 1996. Exports are made up mostly of traditional glass and costume jewellery. Last year, glass and light ceramics made up 2.55% of production in processing industries, 4.42% of exports and 4.34% of labour. The share of this field on the positive foreign trade balance in the processing industry was much higher at 26.4%. In the first half of last year, exports from glass and light ceramics production increased by 8.7%. The positive trade balance for the first half of 1997 increased year-on-year by Kcs 2.9 billion. The industry of glass and light ceramics includes production and processing of glass, porcelain production, medical ceramics and similar areas, such as costume jewellery, artificial flowers, glass machines and moulds. The Industry and Trade Ministry shows that the production base of the industry is basically privatised. Foreign capital entered in the range of Kcs 17.5 billion, which is 30% of the basic capital of the industry. Domestic demand makes up about 30% of sales in the industry.
