The Crystalex Novy Bor Joint Stock Company is organising the VIII. annual International Glass Symposium: IGS 2003. According to Crystalex, it is the largest event of its kind in the Czech Republic and provides a unique opportunity to meet designers, art historians, gallery owners, leading glass experts, and manufacturers of domestic and artistic glass. It has become a socially significant event in the region and one that is followed by the national media. Almost 50 Czech and foreign designers (including some from the UK, the USA, Germany, France, and Japan) will meet at the Novy Bor plants of Crystalex between the 8 – 12 October 2003 in order to carry out projects in the fields of furnace shaped glass, painting, cutting, and engraving in co-operation with Crystalex glass makers. As a new feature of the 2003 event, students of schools of applied glass art at secondary and college level will take part. The technical facilities of the glassworks will be fully at the disposal of all artists during the Symposium, as will the skills of master craftsmen and engineers. This all combines to generate the optimum conditions for creative activity. As part of the IGS, the now traditional open day will be held on 11 October 2003. This event gives the general public the opportunity to get to know the work of top glass artists and Crystalex crafts people. Immediately after the event, the pieces created at the IGS will be presented to the public at an exhibition in Novy Bor. The permanent exhibition at the nearby stately home of Lemberk also offers a cross-section of the results of all the annual IGS to have taken place so far.
