The Director General of the British Glass Manufacturers“ Confederation, David Workman, was elected President of the Brussels-based European Glass Manufacturers“ umbrella body, CPIV, at its General Assembly in June 2005. Commenting on his appointment, Mr. Workman said “I take up this position at a critical time for glass. Around Europe we face increased costs for energy and from legislative compliance whilst global competition is getting tougher. The industry needs a strong voice at the centre of Europe, not just in the Commission but also in Parliament”. “The sheer size of the task, in an enlarged EU, is such that it can only be effectively delivered through an industry-wide umbrella body. After all, the major issues currently being tackled impact equally across all sub-sectors.” Mr. Workman concluded, “I hope to be able to play a constructive part in raising the glass industry“s profile in the corridors of power in Brussels.”
