4 December 1997: The US firm Corning Incorporated is converting an existing company property in the state of New Jersey into the Corning Photonic Research & Test Center. Initially, 10 to 20 research scientists will test the performance of fibre and photonic component devices. The facility is scheduled to become fully operational by 1998. “This will enable Corning to enhance its development of optimised photonic components and fibre for its customers“ systems,” said Charles Deneka of Corning. As Corning becomes more involved with the telecommunications industry, it is abandoning the activity for which it has traditionally been known, glass table- and ovenware. After more than 80 years in business, Corning sold its Consumer Products Company to AEA Investors for approximately US$ 975 million.
