A Corning Inc. engineer will receive the 2008 President“s Award at the National Women of Color Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Conference. Diana DeLaney, a process engineer at Corning Inc. for 16 years, will receive the award during the 23-25 October 2008 conference in Dallas. Ms. DeLaney said she is proud to have been chosen for the honor. “In a society that promotes instant gratification and the pursuit of mediocrity, aspirations toward a technical career are all but non-existent, especially for minority women”, she said. “The … award offers a rare opportunity for women of color to be recognized for their technical achievements while providing a vision of what is possible for the next generation”. Corning Inc. said Ms. DeLaney developed a process to identify the causes of surface polishing defects in optics produced by subsidiary Corning Tropel. She also carried out a plan that improved production for environmental catalytic converters at subsidiary Cormetech and designed and instructed a class at Cormetech to train plant operators. Six other Corning scientists will be recognized at the conference for outstanding career achievements. Ying Li, senior development engineer, optics, and Elizabeth Tran, senior research scientist in biochemistry, will be honored as 2008 Technology All-Star award recipients. Three other Corning scientists are named Technology Rising Stars: Deepti Mudaliar, engineer, biochemistry; Ying Wei, technologist, cell biology; and Sinue Gomez, senior research scientist, glass research. Ms. Gomez and Ivan Cornejo, research director, have also been named as “Most Important Hispanics in Technology” for 2008 and will be honored at the conference. The conference recognizes outstanding women in the science, technology, engineering and math fields and provides opportunities for professional development, networking and recruiting.
