A group of Taiwanese landowners“ protesting against the low rent paid on land used by a central Taiwan science park targeted US-based Corning Inc. during their demonstrations, it was reported. The protests began on 16 September 2004, the day that Corning began building work on its Taichung LCD glass plant. A demonstration by the group paralyzed traffic on the road near Corning“s construction site, and a press photo showed signs against Corning which were put by the protesters. The land is to be used for a new USD 750 million LCD glass substrate manufacturing facility. Corning had said in July 2004 it expected to begin initial manufacturing in Taichung during the 3Q 2005.
