23 April 1998: Corning Incorporated of the US said that it will offer a selective voluntary early retirement program and, to the extent necessary, enhance separation benefits to its employees in the second quarter. Corning said that it was taking advantage of the recent divestiture of its consumer housewares business to an affiliate of Borden, Inc. to streamline and simplify its organization. According to the company, the cost of the program would be recorded as a charge in its second quarter results and is likely to offset the previously announced gain on the consumer divestiture.
