8 January 1998: The US firm Corning Inc. is to construct a US$ 300 million optical fibre plant in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, the second-largest industrial development in the county“s recent history. The fibre optic plant will employ 600 workers when it starts operation some time in 1999, with Corning“s pledge of a 10% premium over the average area manufacturing wage of approximately US$ 11 per hour. Tom Nettleman, who will become plant manager, projects the plant“s impact on the local economy through to 2004 at US$ 700 million, including construction and five years of operation.
