Corning Inc. will invest almost US$ 130 million to more than double its liquid-crystal-display glass manufacturing capacity at its Corning Japan KK facility in Shizuoka, Japan. In a recent press release, the company said it expects the demand for its LCD glass to continue to increase. The doubling of capacity in Japan is one of several expansions the company plans this year to meet the rising demand for precision flat glass. Other investments in the company“s plan to double its worldwide capacity by the end of 2000 include US$ 50 million to construct a new facility in Taiwan, and US$ 66 million to expand capacity at its Harrodsburg, Kentucky, facility. In addition, Samsung Corning Precision Glass Co. – a joint venture in Korea of Corning and Samsung – is investing more than US$ 200 million to quadruple its LCD glass capacity by the end of this year. Corning reported 1999 revenue of $4.37 billion.
