The Federal Statistics Office in Wiesbaden has announced that approximately 331 million litres of bottled beer were exported last year, which was 85 million litres more than the amount exported in cans. By far the biggest importer of beer in glass containers in 1999 was the US (120 million litres), ahead of Italy (60 million litres), the UK (55 million litres), France (21 million litres) and Belgium (12 million litres). German beer in cans was purchased mainly by France (65 million litres), followed by Spain (52 million litres), the UK (27 million litres), Italy (21 million litres), Switzerland (10 million litres) and the US (7.2 million litres).
