US-based Consumers Packaging has reached a preliminary agreement with the Anheuser-Busch Packaging Group to create a joint-venture company that would acquire and re-open the Houston, Texas glass manufacturing plant now owned by Anchor Glass. It will be the first US glass container plant opening since 1980. The new company would supply bottles to the Houston brewery of Anheuser-Busch under a long-term contract. The contract, which takes effect in January 2001, could represent more than US$ 70 million in annual sales. Earlier in 1999, Consumers“ subsidiary Anchor Glass Container was awarded a long-term contract to supply Anheuser-Busch breweries in the Southeast. Consumers Packaging and Anheuser-Busch would invest approximately US$ 100 million in the project to create a state-of-the-art facility.
