Polish chemical company Ciech SA is looking at purchasing soda ash plants in the Ukraine, Germany and Romania, it was reported on 10 March 2005. Although Ciech has been planning to expand in the soda ash sector for some time, until now it has not moved much beyond the planning stage. An attempt to purchase the Crimean Soda Ash company failed when information about the company“s obligations emerged during the tender. For two years Ciech has been negotiating the acquisition of a soda ash company in Strasfurt, eastern Germany, although talks are deadlocked over the price. The most recent expansion target is a Romanian company, controlling two soda ash production facilities. The company was purchased from the government by private investors. The next step is for Ciech to choose an advisor who should present a feasibility study in the next two to four months.
